Luke Browning’s first Super Formula weekend delivered a mix of challenges and a breakthrough performance.
The Atlassian Williams F1 Team Reserve Driver secured an impressive P4 finish in Race 2 at Mobility Resort Motegi. Taking on a completely new championship, car and racing environment, the 24-year-old Brit showed both resilience and raw pace across the opening double-header of the 2026 season.
Motegi sets the stage for the season opener
Mobility Resort Motegi, a 4.8 km circuit known for its stop-and-go layout and heavy braking zones, hosted the opening round of the 2026 Super Formula season. Tyre management and track position proved decisive across the weekend, particularly with evolving grip levels on the recently resurfaced track.

A promising start in practice
Friday offered early signs of potential, with Luke steadily building confidence on a newly resurfaced Motegi circuit that challenged drivers with evolving grip levels and unusual tyre behaviour. After finishing P14 in FP1, he made a strong step forward in FP2, placing P9 and ending the day as the highest-placed rookie — an encouraging start ahead of qualifying.
A difficult opening race in extreme conditions
Saturday proved far more complex. A brake lock-up in Turn 5 during Qualifying 1 prevented Luke from progressing, leaving him down the order on the grid. In Race 1, worsening weather conditions and poor visibility turned the race into a survival challenge. During a Safety Car period, a radio issue meant Luke did not receive crucial information from the team. With visibility severely reduced by heavy rain, he was unable to react in time to slowing cars ahead, resulting in contact and a compromised race.Despite continuing, the incident — combined with a penalty — left him with a P20 finish in a disrupted and shortened race.
From frustration to one of the drives of the weekend
Sunday told a completely different story. After another difficult qualifying left him starting P21, Luke and Kondo Racing opted for a bold alternative strategy — one that would ultimately define the race. Managing his tyres expertly, Luke extended his stint far longer than most of the field, showing remarkable consistency and control. As others pitted earlier, he climbed through the order and, at one stage, was effectively leading the race. Running at a pace comparable — and at times superior — to those behind, he maintained track position deep into the final laps before making his mandatory pit stop just before the end. The strategy paid off: Rejoining in P4, Luke completed a remarkable comeback from the back of the grid, securing his first points in Super Formula and one of the standout performances of the weekend.
Strong pace, bold strategy and a clear statement
The final result reflected not only strategic execution, but also genuine race pace.“It was a logical strategy given our pace,” Luke explained afterwards. “Both our pace and tyre degradation were strong, so staying out was the right decision.” He added: “I couldn’t believe we could maintain that speed… I think we were among the fastest throughout the race.” The performance was also recognised within the team, with Kondo Racing highlighting the combination of bold strategy, strong tyre management and decisive execution that enabled the climb from P21 to P4.
A weekend of learning — and a glimpse of what’s possible
While the opening race underlined the challenges of adapting to a new category, Sunday’s result demonstrated the potential when everything comes together. Luke himself was clear about the bigger picture: understanding the car’s operating window remains key in Super Formula, where small changes in track conditions and setup can have a major impact on performance. “Putting the car in the right window is really difficult… but if we get there, we can be very competitive.”, he said.
Fan reaction builds quickly online
The impact of the drive was immediately visible across X, where fans and motorsport accounts highlighted the scale of the comeback. Posts celebrating the charge from P21 to P4 quickly gained traction, with many pointing to Luke as one of the standout performers of the opening round. Clips of his extended stint and race-leading phase were widely shared, reinforcing the perception of a driver capable of executing both pace and strategy at a high level from the outset.
The next challenge comes at Autopolis later this month
Round 3 is scheduled for the final weekend of April, on the 25th and 26th. A very different circuit in layout and demands, it will offer another key reference point in Luke’s adaptation to the championship.
With momentum on his side and clear signs of front-running potential, all eyes now turn to the next race — where the objective will be to build on this result and confirm this trajectory at the front of the field.
