Luke Browning's rookie Super Formula campaign has already delivered plenty of standout moments, with the Atlassian Williams F1 Team reserve driver adapting to a new championship, car and racing environment while competing for Kondo Racing. From dramatic comebacks to strong qualifying performances, Luke has shown plenty of pace across the opening eight rounds.
Pre season testing
Luke's Super Formula journey began with pre-season testing at Suzuka, where he overcame a dramatic crash in torrential conditions to complete the remainder of the test. He continued to build experience in the Dallara SF23, finishing as the second-highest rookie overall. That preparation set the stage for his competitive debut at Motegi.
Motegi
The opening weekend immediately showcased Luke's potential. After finishing P9 in FP2, his first race was disrupted by difficult weather and contact, leaving him P20. Sunday produced a remarkable turnaround. Starting P21, Luke and Kondo Racing opted for a bold tyre strategy, allowing him to climb through the field before eventually finishing P4 and securing his first Super Formula points.
Autopolis
Autopolis provided another new challenge, but worsening weather ultimately meant the race was abandoned after running behind the Safety Car.
Suzuka
At Suzuka, Luke bounced back with another standout performance. A clever strategy call in changing conditions saw him charge through the field to finish P4, matching his best result at the time. He followed that with P14 in Round 5, leaving Suzuka eighth in the championship with 16 points.
Fuji
Fuji brought one of Luke's strongest weekends yet, with the postponed Autopolis race creating a unique triple-header. The weekend's highlight came in qualifying, where Luke secured a career best P3 in wet conditions. He went on to finish P8 in Round 6, before recovering from the back of the grid to finish P10 in the rearranged sprint. Round 7 saw another recovery drive, with Luke gaining seven places to finish P10.
Sugo
Luke's final new circuit of the season came at Sportsland Sugo, where he showed promising pace with the third fastest time in FP2. After qualifying P21, he produced another strong recovery drive in the 51 lap race, climbing through the field to finish P11. He gained 10 places from his starting position and came agonisingly close to scoring another championship point, missing out on P10 by just 0.285 seconds.
Whats next?
With eight rounds complete, Luke's rookie Super Formula campaign now heads into its final two weekends. The championship returns to Fuji Speedway for Rounds 9 and 10 from October 9–11, before concluding at Suzuka Circuit for Rounds 11 and 12 from November 20–22. Luke will be looking to build on his progress so far and finish his debut season on a high.
